This is the largest painting I have ever done. It is 72" x 72" or 180 x 180 cm and is oil on canvas. It's a Lusitano stallion. Lesley Thiel, 2011. May not be used without my written permission.

I can't say that I get how you do it.. Is it oil? I've tried painting with oil but I always get sick of it before I'm finished, so I never reach an end result. It is gorgeous, no doubt!! Keep on doing what you're doing, the world needs more great young artist to draw the amazing animal - The Horse!

I'm glad you like it! Yes, it's oil and takes a lot of patience using small brushes. I agree, they are the most amazing animals and a constant inspiration to me.

ok you must be kidding me this is not a photo?? wow brilliant work, how the heck did you manage to draw in such a huge canvass ive always wanted to try but pastels only work on paper could you imagine getting half way through and it tearing eeek

It felt a bit like trying to climb a mountain for the first time. No, I wouldn't want to try this size in pastels. I think it would all end up on me instead of on the paper. I think you would cry if it tore halfway through!

I take thousands (literally) of photos of the horses I paint, then use various shots to build the piece I want.

So first I looked at this and went, "hmm. Nice photograph. I guess they took out the background in photoshop." Then I read the description and looked at it again and said, "No way." I zoomed in and looked at it yet again, and my jaw dropped. "Wow. That's really a painting." Absolutely stunning. You are obviously very talented :D

Thank you so much :D. The "it's a photo" thing is a problem, but I like to paint that way so I have to live with it I guess.

It can be with some people. They assume they're copies of photos, which they're not. I use multiple reference photos for any painting. Some people can be quite dismissive and nasty about them not being from life, even though there is no way to paint a horse in motion from life.

I got really lucky with the pose. He was showing off to a mare. She can't have been more than 11 hands but a stallion doesn't seem to care about that.
